Neiman Marcus Cookie Scandal – Urban Email Legends

Tale as old as time…

Being on the internet for many years I have received many, many email forwards. So with that I bring you this article!

I recently received the famous “Neiman-Marcus” Cookie scandal…

You know the one – “When decent people get screwed over, this is the result! A little background: Neiman-Marcus, if you don’t know already, is a very expensive store; they sell your typical $8.00 T-shirt for $50.00. i bought a cookie and they charged me $250 for the recipe!”

According to legend, a woman sought sweet revenge after being charged $250 by Neiman Marcus for a cookie recipe. But alas no… This is a golden oldie.. perhaps one of the first real urban legend emails I can recall. It’s a classic David and Goliath story. The little guy takes down the big evil corporation after it has been wronged. Would an anonymous, forwarded-a-million-times e-mail lie to you?

100% urban legend… 99% of things you would get in an email are urban legends..

Quick tip for everyone – If you are not sure if something is an urban legend or not… you can take a few key words from the email…. like for example in this one….

NeimansCookies - Neiman Marcus Cookie Scandal - Urban Email Legends“Neiman marcus cookie” … and add the word “email” and enter it all  into google.

Try typing “Neiman marcus cookie email” into google.

You will see the first 3 results all clearly showing this as a hoax…  This works for pretty much any email / picture you get into your inbox that sounds off, is too good to be true or is trying to scare you in some way or another… Try it out next time  🙂

Cookie recipes are not so bad to forward although this is really putting down a major department store for no reason.  Some of these email forwards are really damaging and when you simply send things on without doing a few seconds check in google…  You sometimes are spreading hate or negative things without realizing it.  Knowledge is power ladies.. and now you all know 🙂

Quick tip #2… if you don’t want someone sending something to everyone you email… learn to use BBC

Return to your regular scheduled email inbox 🙂
