Sometimes in life it is hard to understand the latest ‘rules’… Is it ok to update our facebook status? Am i allowed to like your company? Should I text late at night after a glass of wine? The world out there has sure gotten confusing.
One that comes up often in the world of friendship is when a person becomes your “best friend”. This is looked at by some as equal to a new romantic relationship and saying “i love you” for the first time. Ie.. A huge ball of stress.
If you have been hanging out with a new gal pal for awhile and feel perhaps she might be falling into the BFF category.. You might want to consider a few points first…
1) Some people throw BFF around and some people take it very seriously. Approach with caution.
2) Most people agree you can have way more than 1 Best Friend. “Best” doesn’t really seem to imply what it once did in the age of moving across the country, twitter and instant text messaging.
3) This lovely poem… Helps narrow it down..
A good friend will tell you what you want to hear.
A best friend will always tell the truth.
A good friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A best friend seeks to help you with your problems.
A good friend will be there for you all through school.
A best friend will be there till the day you die.
A good friend will bail you out of prison.
A best friend will be sitting next to you saying
“damn that was fun!”.
A good friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A best friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.
A good friend hates it when you call after they’ve gone to bed.
A best friend asks you why you took so long to call.
A good friend wonders about your romantic history.
A best friend could blackmail you with it.
A good friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A best friend calls you after you had a fight.
A good friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A best friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.
A good friend has never seen you cry.
A best friend has shoulders soggy from your tears.
A good friend doesn’t know your parents’ first names.
A best friend has their phone numbers in his address book.
A good friend expects you to always be there for them.
A best friend expects to always be there for you.
A good friend is someone you enjoy hanging out with.
A best friend is someone you need.
Now that we have cleared the rules up… Go out there.. a find your BFF! If you have one… why not text her right now? Facebook status? ok… Email works too.
